PCA employees at the Salem, Oregon, full-line plant recently worked together to raise more than $3,000 for a local children’s hospital after funds raised by Gilgamesh Brewing, which sits next door to the plant, were stolen from the brewery.
Gilgamesh had been raising money for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU). A portion of the proceeds from its “Terry Porter” brew were to be donated to the hospital in support of OHSU’s Cystic Fibrosis Center. In late March, a break-in occurred at the brewery, and about $3,000 was stolen from the fund.
PCA’s employees in Salem reacted quickly to this news by launching a fundraiser, receiving donations from both hourly and salaried workers. In addition to these private donations, checks from PCA and the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers (AWPPW) were presented to the hospital. Together, they more than made up for the amount stolen.
