Recently several employees from PCA’s Lake Forest and Mundelein, Illinois, facilities volunteered at Bernie’s Book Bank, a local organization whose mission is to "collect, process and distribute new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout Chicagoland."
The PCA volunteers spent two hours sorting and bagging an assortment of books to be delivered to area children, grades 4 through 6. In anticipation of the volunteer event, a book drive was also held at PCA’s corporate office. The goal was to collect 1,500 used and new books. However that goal was well surpassed with over 2,500 books donated by employees.
According to one of the participants: "Volunteering at Bernie’s Book Bank really opened my eyes. After learning that three out of five low-income families in Chicagoland have absolutely no children’s books in their home, I really understood how much of a difference Bernie’s is making in these kids’ lives. I was proud to be a part of it."
