PCA and RFID/EPC
PCA is informed, prepared and actively engaged in identifying
technologies and applications for RFID/EPC identification
of transport packaging and its contents. We are committed
to meeting the current and future needs of our customers
in this and all areas requiring packaging solutions.
PCA has been quietly involved in RFID since the late 1990's.
As early as 1998, PCA has had a focused and capable team
tracking the technology and how it might best be leveraged
with transport packaging. More than simply concentrating
on tagging containers, PCA has taken an "Options and
Preparedness" approach to current and future offerings.
To be positioned with the best technology options, PCA
became an inaugural member of MIT's "Packaging/RFID
Special Interest Group." Our support for development
of improved technical options through MIT continues. We
are also members of EPCglobal, the international group developing
standards, best practices and sharing practical means of
implementing RFID/EPC. To ensure that our industry is positioned
to manage the potential impact of an emerging technology,
PCA is also a founding member of the Fibre Box Association
(FBA) Task Team on the subject. Among other initiatives,
this team is working to ensure that RFID-tagged containers
remain fully and economically recyclable.
PCA recognizes that RFID enablement of transport packaging
may offer significant benefits to retailers, and certain
other members of the supply chain. PCA believes flexibility
and preparedness will serve us and our customers well.
This approach requires our working closely with our customers
and on a number of fronts.
We see our role as partners with our customers - together
seeking practical solutions. As such, we will pursue a number
of potential solutions rather than a "one size fits
all approach." For these reasons, PCA is ideally situated
to work with you toward effective, realistic solutions appropriate
to your unique situation in meeting the growing demand
for RFID enablement of transport packaging.
