PCA Exhibits at the Walmart Sustainability Expo
April 8, 2010
Walmart Stores, Inc. hosted its 5th annual Sustainable Packaging Exposition April 6–7, 2010, at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center in Rogers, Arkansas. Similar to previous years, exhibitors and participants were selected to attend by invitation only.
Each exhibitor was asked to present an example of its advances in or support of sustainable packaging solutions. PCA
showcased its innovative redesign of an existing box used to package a pressure cooker. The original interior packaging of the pressure cooker utilized styrofoam in a large box. PCA’s Hong Kong design center reconfigured the box using corrugated inserts instead of styrofoam, allowing the design for a smaller, more environmentally friendly exterior box.
Sustainable packaging solutions are achieved by delivering the most benefit and value with the least amount of raw material. In the case of the pressure cooker, by using less material and a smaller box, it became possible to stack more boxes on a pallet and ship more packages in an overseas container. Even the smallest of modifications in packaging result in benefits for the environment.
