Packaging Corporation of America’s Hexacomb® product has proven itself to be a versatile protective packaging material. However PCA’s Hexacomb® designers continue to find surprising and creative new applications for the material outside of the packaging world.
One example of the product’s use is as a mockup material to design new hospital facilities across the United States. Once designed and assembled, hospital employees are encouraged to visit the prototype, which is built to scale from Hexacomb® material, and make suggestions for changes or improvements. This approach keeps construction expenses down by limiting modifications during the building phase of a project.
Hexacomb® designers are experts at developing these mockups and participate in several projects of this nature each year.
“It looks like a kid’s playhouse, but it’s really here to help us create efficient spaces,” explained one of the doctors involved. The mockup that this particular doctor was involved in included operating suites and patient rooms and filled a 30,000-square-foot warehouse.
“It really has been a gift to design like this,” added one participant. “If I built a house, I’d want to construct a mockup like this first.”
